Reel Roots: Windrush – Follow the tour

The Reel Roots: Windrush kicks off its tour of Scotland this Friday! Follow the tour and buy tickets for local screenings here.

About the tour

Reel Roots: Windrush is the first of a two-part series exploring Blackness in Britain, curated by The New Black Film Collective with support from Film Hub Scotland.

The programme is a spotlight on Black people of Caribbean heritage who have resided in the UK since the Windrush generation, and on the fruits of their culture in cinema. It offers a unique opportunity to give a sense of belonging to communities with this heritage, and to hear their many, complex stories.

Highlights:

Rebel Dread (2020), the new documentary about legendary musician, DJ and filmmaker Don Letts and the influence of reggae on British punk

Marley (2012), the definitive documentary about the music, life and legacy of reggae legend, Bob Marley

Babymother (1998) likely the first Black British musical, about a young mother who dreams of becoming a singer. Steeped in dancehall and ‘90s youth culture

Plus, pair Dancehall Queen (1997) with Rebel Dread. Directed by Rick Elgood and the Rebel Dread Don Letts, this colourful Kingston Cinderella story became the biggest box office hit in Jamaica.

Also screening:

I Am the Gorgon: Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee and the Roots of Reggae (2013), Inna De Yard: The Soul of Jamaica (2019), Playing Away (1987), Pressure (1976), Lee Scratch Perry’s Vision of Paradise (2015), The Stuart Hall Project (2013), 1,000 Londoners,  ‘Arrival’: Celebrating Windrush 2018 (2018)
